Tourist Recycling - ‘On the Road’ Recycling’

This project is a programme promoting recycling and recycling services to visitors travelling in the Northland region.

The project promotes existing council services as well as extended recycling services specifically designed for

visitors to the Northland region. The project works by implementing a pre-paid recycling bag with drop-off locations

around the region. The project is promoted in popular publications by AA, Destination Northland & Jason's maps.

Water Conservation

This project carried out research and provided options to reduce water consumption based on the

Whangarei District Council water services department. This project is focusing on the Whangarei District as the

district has plans to develop a new dam over the next decade. Eco Solutions has researched the best possible

options for the delivery of water to the general public and to postpone the need for a new dam for as long as possible.

Whangarei District Council has planned through the LTCCP process the building of a new dam to satisfy future water demand.

The research project provides research on options to postpone the demand for the new dam through water conservation

education and promotion. Savings are identified through the process that can be allocated to the cost of an education

and promotion programme.

*This research project was funded by the Ministry for the Environment – Sustainable Management Fund and CBEC.

Hospitality and Accommodation Focus

This project is a pilot programme throughout the Far North and Whangarei districts. The project aims to work with a number

of businesses in the hospitality and accommodation industry to reduce their environmental impact by working to

reduce their solid waste, electricity usage, water usage and to assess their purchasing practices.

The projects goal is to increase staff and management awareness of resource consumption.

*This project was funded by the Shell Sustainability Fund & the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Promotion of washable nappies

Eco Solutions held nappy seminars throughout the Northland region in 2006, 2007 and 2009.

Through the initial promotion of washable nappies our staff have found availability of washable nappies was

one of the biggest barriers. Due to the ongoing interest in the topic we now display a variety of washable

nappies and provide information on where to purchase these. This project was initially funded under the

Whangarei & Far North district council education programmes.
